HABITAT AND RANGE

They live in isolated spots of tropical rainforest in Central and South America.

IDENTIFICATION

Easily identifiable by their bright blue bodies with black spots, and are about 1 inch long.

DIET

Ants, termites, small beetles, and any other type of small insects they can find.

REPRODUCTION AND LIFESPAN

Live 3-15 years in the wild. Females lay eggs under moist leaves, and when they hatch the males carry each tadpole to its own individual pond of water.

NOTES

 

  • As their name suggests, their skin is highly toxic, and because of this have only one predator, a type of snake that has developed a resistance to their toxins
  • Their toxins are believed to come from the insects they eat
  • Their tadpoles are cannibalistic and must be placed in their own pools of water, and are fed by their mothers unfertilized eggs.
