HABITAT AND RANGE

They live in the semi-arid, low lying rocky areas of Puerto Rico.

IDENTIFICATION

Their color varies from a brown or olive color, to a more gold color. They can be 3-4 inches in length, and have rough skin and a distinctive crest.

DIET

They eat insects, worms, and other invertebrates.

REPRODUCTION AND LIFESPAN

Breeding is prompted by heavy rain, then the females will lay long strands of 15,000 eggs. Their life span in the wild is unknown, but they live about 10 years in captivity.

NOTES

  • They are listed as critically endangered, and there are assumed to be less than 250 mature individuals left in the wild
  • They are the only species of toad native to Puerto Rico
