The stinkpot turtle, or commonly known as musk turtle, may emit a foul smell from its four musk glands. This smelly substance is discharged when the turtle becomes frightened or startled, hence the name “stinkpot” turtle. They are frequently found wondering around the bottom of a water body, rather than swimming. During the colder seasons, stinkpots will dig themselves into the mud to escape the freezing temperatures.
