Camp Counselor - Seasonal

Position: Summer Camp Counselor – Seasonal starting in June 2024 

Both 40 hrs/wk and 25 hrs/wk positions available

Reports to: Camp Program Coordinator and Lead Summer Camp Counselor 

Supervises: Summer camp children ages 3-15, and junior volunteers 14+

Coordinates with: Camp Program Coordinator, other seasonal summer camp counselors, parents/guardians of camp children, Education Program Coordinator, Education Administrator, Directors of Education, Volunteer Manager, other Education Department FT employees, and other zoo staff 

Summary of Responsibilities:

You are a highly motivated individual who along with your fellow camp counselors will be responsible for developing, organizing, and implementing summer camp curriculum for campers ages 3- 15. You will provide exceptional education, supportive care and a fun experience to campers and outstanding guest service to parents/guardians. You must be able to cooperate in a team, be self-reliant and thrive in a flexible environment. A love of wildlife and conservation is highly recommended. 

 
  • Assist the Zoo in fostering an appreciation of wildlife and their habitats that will inspire active participation in conservation
  • Assist management in ensuring safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all areas of operation 
  • To treat with confidentiality all information entrusted or known by you regarding guests, animals, business, employees, volunteers, incidents and any other sensitive information and to discuss it only with the proper management representatives
  • Be available as per business needs
  • Follow and adhere to all policies, procedures and safety protocols for the department and the Zoo
  • Use proper radio etiquette, call numbers, and adhere to proper dress attire at all time
  • Attend required training sessions from June 10-14 
  • Assist in developing lesson plans, games and activities in coordination with curriculum
  • Adhere to and implement planned programming
  • Able to travel off site to partnering camps if needed 
  • Bring energy and enthusiasm to the 11 weeks of camp 
  • Check in and sign out campers at the beginning and end of each day
  • Communicate with campers’ parents/guardians on a daily basis
  • Coordinate all health, medical and release forms for each camper
  • Capable of handling minor conflicts among campers and staff
  • Prepare and manage camp spaces including supplies required

Education:

Minimum one-year completion of degree program in Environmental Science, Education, Biology, Zoology, Animal Science or related field or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience

 

Work Experience: 

Previous experience caring for, teaching, or working with children

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to adapt to changing plans and handle multiple priorities
  • Desire to teach wildlife, conservation and ecological concepts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Great punctuality and organizational skills
  • Must have great teamwork and problem solving skills
  •  

Preferred Skills:

First Aid/CPR Certification

Leadership experience

Valid Driver’s License and personal vehicle (for specific staff only)

Identification: 

Two forms of official valid identification are required. 

Ability to pass background and child abuse clearances
