About

The African bullfrog is the largest amphibian located in South Africa. The frog has the ability to tolerate Africa’s harsh environment. Temperatures can rise to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and plummet below freezing in the winter. During this time the bullfrog will remain underground until the rainy season begins. Calls such as their recognizable loud, bellowing call is used to locate females during mating season.

Habitat & Range
The African bullfrog population ranges throughout central, eastern, and South Africa. They are found near waterways, rivers and streams, but in the dry season they live underground.
Identification
Mature African bullfrogs have a chubby body and are olive green in color. Males will have a yellow or orange throat, and female throats are cream colored. Males measure approximately 9.5 inches long, and females measure much smaller at 4.5 inches.
Diet
Adult bullfrogs are not picky when it comes to a meal. They will feed on insects, frogs, reptiles, small mammals and even birds.
Reproduction & Lifespan
Eggs of the African bullfrog are laid on shallow areas of water and develop into tadpoles just two days later. A female can produce anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 eggs. It is common for a bullfrog to live 20 years, however they may live past 40 years.
Fantastic Fact
Although male African bullfrogs are supposed to protect their young, occasionally they will eat their own tadpoles.
