About

The Himalayan monal is found in high altitudes of up to 4000 feet. It shows greater seasonal movements than other pheasants in the area, moving to much lower altitudes of 2000 feet in the wintertime.

Habitat & Range
These pheasants live in eastern Afghanistan and through the Himalayas to China, including Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar.
Identification
Adult males are distinguished by their rainbow of plumage, while females, like other pheasants, have muted plumage. Males have a long, metallic green crests, coppery backs and necks, and white rumps that make them stand out in flight.
Diet
These pheasants primarily eat seeds, grains, insects and vegetation.
Reproduction & Lifespan
Himalayan Monal’s begin breeding in April when they migrate into higher altitudes. Females lay between three to five eggs each season and those eggs incubate for about 27 days. Males stand guard during the egg incubation period. In captivity, these birds live anywhere between ten to twelve years.
Fantastic Fact
This species of pheasant is extremely communicative, using both body displays and vocalizations. The wide range in their calls allows them to differentiate between contentment, aggression, alarm, and advertising for a mate.
