Elmwood Park Zoo offers exciting, experiential hands-on learning opportunities to students and professionals interested in exploring careers in the fields of Zoology, Conservation, Environmental or Veterinary Science, Education, Marketing and Event Planning.

Internship opportunities

The animal care internship provides an opportunity for college students majoring in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Environmental Education or a related field or a recent graduate in any of those fields an opportunity to explore a career working with animals. This internship will provide the intern with valuable hands-on experience while working side by side with keepers throughout the zoo.

Who is eligible?

  • The internship is open to current college students, recent college graduates, those considering a career with animals and career changers
  • Previous animal experience is not a requirement, but helpful
  • The ability to work as part of a team is crucial, as are strong communication skills.
  • Must be able to do physical work including being on your feet for more than 8 hours, lifting up to 50 pounds and perform activities such as raking or shoveling
  • Must have complete/clear PA Child Abuse Clearance and PA Criminal Background check
  • Proof of a current TB test with a negative result is required
  • You must be at least 18 years of age

Time requirements:

  • This internship requires a commitment of two days per week during the summer session, additional days are permitted if desired
  • This internship requires a commitment of one day per week during the fall, winter and spring sessions, additional days are permitted if desired
  • Each session is a duration of 12 weeks, sessions occur quarterly and are available for the Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring
  • Must be able to attend a scheduled interview and a scheduled orientation prior start of session
  • Shifts are 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m
  • Intern shifts occur every day regardless of weather, except in cases of extreme weather when the Zoo is closed.
  • Intern shifts occur every day regardless of holiday, except  Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day when the zoo is closed.

Duties (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Preparing/distributing diets
  • Maintaining exhibits/enclosures
  • Preparing animal enrichment
  • Assisting keepers with animal training (as available)
  • Speaking to guests as part of keeper talks
  • Daily observation and reporting of animal behaviors

The Education and Internship is a dynamic experience designed to give individuals practical experience in delivering conservation-based informal education programming to guests in order to help advance the zoo’s mission of saving species. This program also includes the opportunity to get hands-on experience learning to care for and manage the animal ambassador collection. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the zoo every day while providing an educational experience to our guests and working side-by-side with educators in the zoo.

Duties (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Caring for the Education animal ambassador collection which may include preparing/distributing diets, maintaining exhibits/enclosures, preparing animal enrichment, assisting keepers with animal training (as available), daily observation and reporting of animal behaviors
  • Deliver informal education programs on site for guests
  • Present animal meet and greets for guests
  • Assist with Zoo-On-Wheels programs as needed

Individuals will gain hands-on experience in promotions, branding, corporate partnership, sponsorship, community relations, non-profit development, preparation of events, data entry and analysis. Marketing interns assist the Marketing Department with writing e-mails, taking and editing photos, social media outlets and ongoing projects. They will also assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of promotional strategies. Interns receive exposure to all of the department’s functions and responsibilities.

Who is eligible?

  • The internship is open to current college students, recent college graduates in the field of Marketing, Communications, or related area of study
  • Excellent writing and communication skills is required
  • Proficient knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge in Adobe creative suite is not required, but prefered
  • Familiarity with a variety of social network mediums
  • Knowledge of web design and HTML preferred but not required
  • Must have complete/clear PA Child Abuse Clearance and PA Criminal Background check
  • You must be at least 18 years of age

Time requirements:

  • Internship sessions are 12 weeks in length and are offered Fall, Spring, Winter and Summer
  • Schedule is based on the needs of Elmwood Park Zoo and intern

Duties (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Assist Marketing Staff with managing social media outlets
  • Help develop new marketing strategies
  • Taking and editing photos
  • Participate in ongoing projects
  • Animal e-mail updates
  • Other duties as assigned

Individuals will gain hands-on experience working with a small team of highly skilled individuals. You will have a submersive learning experience as you assist in the may steps involved in event management from advertising and marketing to event set up and breakdown. This position offers interns a valuable opportunity to learn about event management that will assist them in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors.  

Who is eligible?

  • Event Management, Hospitality, Sales or related area of study
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Excited to meet and work with people and able to research events
  • Motivated, self-starter who can take minimal direction and see projects through
  • Able to help with some set-up and tear-down of tables, chairs, technical equipment, etc.
  • Academic credit or non-credit accepted
  • Must have complete PA Child Abuse Clearance and PA Criminal Background check
  • You must be at least 18 years of age

Time requirements:

  • Internship sessions are 12 weeks in length and are offered Fall, Spring, Winter and Summer
  • Schedule is based on the needs of Elmwood Park Zoo and intern
  • The minimum required time is 10 hours per work week

Duties (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Assist with the development of special events and projects
  • Supporting EPZ departments during events
  • Learn to negotiate and and write up event contracts and develop a rapport with rental clients
  • Create event budget and cost analysis reports as well as rental estimates for potential clients
  • Other duties as assigned
